Jetson is a collaborative speculative design collection that explores how the boundaries of domestic and occupational spaces may continue to blur in a post-pandemic future.
When our team was asked to imagine how lines between domestic and professional spaces may continue to blur after the COVID-19 pandemic, we searched for insight from the ultimate family of the future: The Jetsons, and their groovy SkyPad suite.
What stood out to us was the increasing ubiquity of the kitchen table, used for school work, office work, storage, art projects, and less often, dinner. The focus of our work turned to how the dining room space will continue to evolve, taking on the characteristics of a workshop or office (but with snacks).
In our speculative world building we imagined a future where thrifting culture has expanded due to supply chain issues and concerns for climate health. To expand on this vision we favored post-consumer materials in our designs, finding exciting ways to combine a DIY aesthetic with the retro-modernism of The Jetsons.
Each piece of the collection explored an observed moment of blurring lines at the dinner table. Over The Edge is a table runner designed to bridge the transition between work and dinner, when school supplies, laptops, and notebooks must be cleared off the table often with nowhere to go. The runner drapes over the table with easily accessible pockets that hold a range of tools.
Denim was chosen for its longterm durability, an important quality in a trend-less future. Sourced entirely from Goodwill jeans, the denim was quilted into a wavy patter drawing on motifs from 60’s geometric modernism. The piece further pushed our exploration into a future where the majority of products are up-cycled and designed to last.
